Site: The corner of my desk, where is the most dynamic area for me
Week 01
At first, I took photos of this corner manually. I tried to traced routes of the items on the desk, and marked the objective time. Also, I found that the light color of photos would change over time, so I took the color of the same spot on each photo. Once the item was used, the square would be filled with color. And I listed them in an order of alphabet. Besides, I recorded the actions taken at each time slot.
week 02
To ensure that each photo was taken from a single angle, I took photos automatically in the second week. Then I arranged those items from most to least moved, which was a simple attempt at “hierarchy”. In the first experiment, time is presented as numbers. And we can see from the map how often they move and the routes they move. In the second experiment, time is presented as the regular clock rotation. There are only images, no routes, which might provide more room for imagination.
week 03
This week I tried another way to present time and replace the traditional clock. Since the changes of items could confirm the passage of time, I decided to use grapes as the “time”. And I still arranged the items in the order they were moved. The second experiment (the third video) is similar to the last one, but here all the items are completely simplified to dots. The decreasing number of grapes can show the time, and this pot of grapes can be regarded as a new clock. To make it clearer, I divided them into 4 categories. This is also an attempt at the LATCH organisation methods. And obviously, drinks were what I used the most. Moreover, I added a grid into the design to more directly contrast them in this same area.
Reflection
Keep developing the idea of “time as duration”, there can be more explorations like using grapes as “time”.
The idea of regarding the desk as a community is interesting, and I could go deeper, such as the role of items in this community, or the role I play in this community, etc.
Keep open to the outcome. If I am not sure whether my project is interesting or not, I can try to ask myself at least four questions about it (if I can’t, then the answer is obvious).
